Growing up, children often understand Christmas as a time when they get a lot of gifts and toys. They have their own wish list that they present to Santa, or at least to their parents. The anticipation of Christmas Day is waking up with the prospects of getting those wants realized with numerous presents under the tree.
This tradition of gift-giving is not necessarily a bad thing. However, more and more parents are realizing the importance of teaching their children the blessing of giving rather than getting all the time. Parents are training their children at an early age to not build an entitlement mentality but rather look for opportunities to bless others and give sacrificially as a substitute of getting selfishly. And parents are honoring the instruction of our Lord not just during Christmas season that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
To the families and parents who read this, let me encourage you to involve your children with a global mentality, sharing with them the need for children around the world to have the basic needs like two meals a day and clean drinking water. In Haiti, our 1,500+ orphans have never been given a Christmas present, and more than toys or games, they need water that won’t get them sick and food that will help them avoid malnourishment and starvation.
Mom and Dad, would you consider supporting Libere 2012 by sponsoring a Haitian orphan for just $41? Some of you can provide a water filtration system for an entire family for just $50. These are Christmas gifts that will bless orphans not just for a moment but for an entire year. I encourage you to browse our photo album to see the hundreds of children needing our help.
I don’t know that I have met a child in our country who has to worry whether the water they drink might lead to a sickness unto death, or struggle to concentrate on their studies because they are hallucinating due to starvation. I don’t want to sound dramatic, but I have met these Haitian orphans and heard their stories. And as best as I can, I want to be their voice to those of you who might read this and bless them with your generous and charitable support.
My hope and prayer is that dozens of families will join Libere 2012 with their children to give life and hope to orphans in Haiti this Christmas. Thank you for considering this opportunity, and may the Lord make our lives a generously leaky.
